The Railway into Tibet
At present, only Qinghai-Tibet Railway goes to Lhasa, Tibet, which is the highest altitude railway in the world. It is one of China’s four major projects in the new century and the first railway to the hinterland of Tibet. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway was completed in two phases. The first phase of the project, from Xining in the east to Golmud in the west, started construction in 1958 and was completed and opened to traffic in May 1984. The second phase of the project, from Golmud in the east to Lhasa in the west, started on June 29, 2001, and opened to traffic on July 1, 2006. Qinghai-Tibet Railway has a total length of 1956km and 85 stations. As of July 1, 2016, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has opened seven routes to Lhasa, the holy city of China, from Guangzhou to Lhasa, Shanghai to Lhasa, Beijing to Lhasa, Lanzhou to Lhasa, Xining to Lhasa, Chengdu to Lhasa and Chongqing to Lhasa. Currently, there are 28 railway stations with direct trains to Lhasa via the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in whole China. So, it is very convenient to travel to Tibet by train.
